UGA Athletic Association Sues to Keep Colors, Icons, and Geography for Themselves

University Of Georgia Athletic Association Inc v. The Seven Six LLC et al, Civil Action No. 3:22-cv-00119-CDL (M.D. Ga., Dec. 22, 2022)

The University of Georgia Athletic Association continues to maintain a tight grip on their marks and colors, this time going after a Tennessee-based apparel and merchandise company selling goods within their “Athens Collection.”

The Complaint alleges the goods in question “conjure and trade upon the University’s identity” by incorporating the school’s colors, portions of their logos, trademarked phrases, iconic images, and geographic indications. In particular, the Complaint claims the unauthorized use of the University’s famous marks violates the Lanham Act, the Georgia Anti-Dilution Statute, and the Deceptive Trade Practices Act.

The case has been assigned to Judge Clay D. Land in the Middle District of Georgia.
